Kwara Health Insurance Scheme

January 24, 2011 § Leave a comment

Most Nigerians pay for their health out of their pocket. Insurance mechanisms are largely unavailable for most people in the informal sector. market women, mechanics, drivers and hair dressers. All these people and their family need protection against the awful consequences of paying for health at the point of need. Out of pocket expenditure often leads to financial ruin, not seeking health care when it is needed and even death as a result of not being able to pay.

I am always very excited when a the government attempts to fix this issue.

Kwara state is doing just that. Bukola Saraki’s government is collaborating with Hygeia and Dutch Government to bring eye sight to more than 700 people. Even more fascinating is that the traditional rulers are getting involved and doing outreach to educate more villagers about the insurance scheme.

This is fantastic news! However, it is imperative that the upcoming new administration of Kwara state continues this scheme. I can only hope.
